The 13th edition of the Andalucía Golf Challenge Circuit “Destination PGA Riviera Maya by Bahía Príncipe” could not have started in a better setting. None other than one of the most prestigious golf clubs in Europe, Finca Cortesín, which has hosted three editions of the World Match Play Championship and will be the venue for the 2023 Solheim Cup in September.

With favourable temperatures for the tournament, a light breeze and spectacular greens that were in perfect condition and superbly presented (very fast and with incomparable ball roll quality), participants were able to enjoy an exceptional day of golf. Players from all over Andalucía and other regions, especially Madrid, took part in the inaugural 2023 competition. As well as Spaniards, other nationalities represented included Norwegian, Finnish, Russian, Italian and French.

After the golf, a superb cocktail reception was held in the elegant Finca Cortesín clubhouse. Especially worth highlighting is the excellent support provided to the tournament by the entire golf club team led by Francisco de Lancastre, with a special mention of Rocío Sánchez Clavijo and Antonio Aguilar.

The services for golfers at Finca Cortesín are unquestionably up there with the best on the Costa del Sol. A member of the team greets players in the car park and takes their clubs to a personalised buggy, which is then left next to the driving range, where balls (courtesy of the club) are neatly stacked in pyramids. Once on the golf course, players are treated to a hot soup consommé during the round. These are top-quality details that make all the difference.

As for the competition itself, the winners were Olav Andreas Maalav (scratch), Hans Peter Dalen (category one) and Rafael Antonio Roldán Sánchez (category two). In addition to the prizes and gifts for the winners and best classified finishers, there was a draw for additional gifts and a special prize for closest to the pin sponsored by Ideaterrazas, suppliers of non-profiled terrace glazing and other top products for enjoying terrace spaces all year round.

The Finca Cortesín event was the first of 30 or so tournaments scheduled to be held during the 13th edition of this hugely popular open amateur circuit, organised by Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine. The Circuit will cover most Andalucian provinces, in addition to other areas of central Spain, with the majority of events being held on the Costa del Sol.

The Circuit’s grand finale, which will decide the five winners of trips to the Mexican Caribbean, will be held at Almenara on 30 September, followed by a gala dinner at Gran Hotel Guadalpín Banús

Access to the final will be direct for the winners of each category and the leading scratch player in all the qualifying tournaments, while the rest of the places in the final will be awarded based on the Benahavís Ranking, calculated from points obtained in each leg.

The next event will be on 25 February at Azata Golf on the Costa del Sol.
