Located just 30 minutes from the Costa del Sol capital, in the eastern part of Málaga province, is a golfing jewel relatively unknown to many people: Baviera Golf, a 18-hole layout designed by José María Cañizares in a privileged setting only 500 metres from the sea.

his par-71 course is highlighted by its expansive greens and a diverse array of hazards that offer golfers great variety in their shot-making. A layout aimed at players of all handicaps while also providing an excellent challenge for professionals. Located in Caleta de Vélez, halfway between the picturesque Nerja municipality – famous for its beaches and white-hued, Andalucian architectural-style streets – and Málaga, the course offers an ideal getaway for golfers enjoying a holiday on the Coast.

The surrounding Mediterranean landscape provides an excellent setting for a second home for numerous tourists who opt for towns such as Cómpeta, Frigiliana and Torrox to spend lengthy stays in winter and play golf. One reason why there is such a large community of British, German and Nordic visitors and residents.

The majestic clubhouse, inaugurated in November 2008, includes amenities with every luxury detail, highlighted by spacious changing rooms, a pro shop and a restaurant with a terrace offering superb sea views.

During the year this venue is chosen by many couples keen to hold their weddings in its stunning gardens; while another key attraction is its underground parking for 200 vehicles.

In addition, Baviera ensures that the course is kept in excellent condition throughout the year, thanks to the maintenance team’s hard work.

This course, inaugurated with nine holes in 2000, opened a second nine in 2004. Baviera Golf, designed by former Ryder Cup star Cañizares, is a flat course, fairly easy except for the greens (which are large, on average), 700 square metres with slopes and swales. The fairways are very forgiving, 80 to 90 metres wide and without climbs or drops. There are four lakes on the first nine, affecting the 3rd, 4th and 5th holes. The signature hole is the 4th, a par-5 of 500 metres where two lakes come into play.
