The sixth edition of the Andalucía Golf Challenge Destination “La Romana Golf Club Bahía Príncipe" in the Dominican Republic Circuit was held on Saturday 18 August at another superb Costa del Sol course: Flamingos, one of Villa Padierna Golf Club’s three 18-hole layouts.

A former venue for several top international professional tournaments (European Seniors Tour final in 2002, 2003 and 2004, Spanish Women’s Open in ????...), Flamingos is a course which, apart from the quality of its design, also stands out for its meticulously maintained aesthetic – evoking a classic Tuscany landscape.

It features a large variety of different tree species and stunning views over the Mediterranean Sea. Its greens are generously expansive and the fairways fairly narrow on the front nine, requiring more accuracy than on the second nine. The greens are seeded with bermuda, except on some holes with raygrass, while pencross has been used for the greens and tees. The bunkers are filled with “marmolina” (cultured or “faux” marble).

As has become customary on this popular circuit, the sixth leg attracted golfers from throughout Andalucía – Huelva, Almería, Sevilla, Córdoba, Málaga, etc. – as well as from countries including Sweden, the UK, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland.

The general comments of the 110 players competing in the tournament were extremely positive, when referring to the both the course and the service and attention received – as to be expected at one of Europe’s finest five-star resorts.

They had special praise for the state of the greens and overall maintenance of the entire course, and also warmly welcomed the provisions table set up between holes one and 10, serving drinks, gazpacho, sandwiches, fruit, etc.

The tournament prizes – top-brand apparel and golf products – were provided by Puerto Banús-based boutique fairway+blue and Holiday Golf, and DO Somontano supplied a section of top wines.

The first five finishers in each category earned a place in the grand final of the Andalucía Golf Circuit, to be held at Royal Guadalmina Golf Club (South Course) on 30 September, where the winners of five trips to the Dominican Republic will be decided.

Caribbean Trip… Including Golf at Exceptional Courses

The prize includes a one-week stay at the five-star Hotel Bahía Principe Bouganville, all-inclusive: flight and four rounds of golf – two at La Romana Golf Club, one at Punta Espada (Cap Cana) and another at Diente de Perro (Casa de Campo).

The top five finishes at Flamingos in category one were: Adrián García Luján (50 points), Dean Bartlett (44), Manuel Castro Rivas (39), Juan David Carretero Castillo (38) and Ricardo Lantero Calleja (36). In category two, the leading five were: María Rosario Morgado Melendo (46 points), Andre Goffaerts (41), María Soledad Marquina Hernández (40), Joaquín Obispo de Torres (39) and Cristóbal Sánchez Gutiérrez (37).

As for the special prizes… closest to the pin was won by José Valiente; and longest drive by Aurora Morgado and Francisco Jémez in the women’s and men’s competitions, respectively.

The scratch winner was Adrián García Luján, who also won category one. In addition to the trophy, he was presented with a special prize of a magnificent painting by renowned Marbella-based artist Alejandro Hermann.

As is traditional, after the golf was concluded, those taking part were able to enjoy a prize-giving ceremony and cocktail-luncheon reception on the clubhouse restaurant terrace, next to the impressive Villa Padierna Palace Hotel.
