The popular annual Andalucía Golf Challenge moves on to the venerable Royal Sotogrande Golf Club in July.

Held at the Costa del Sol’s premier courses, this amateur circuit is now in its seventh year and has become a classic on the Andalucian golf schedule, creating great expectation and interest among golfers from throughout Europe – thanks to a combination of top-quality venues, excellent organisation and superb prizes.

The opening event of the summer season was held at Royal Guadalmina Golf Club in Marbella, and Royal Sotogrande will now take over the baton with two tournaments: on Monday and Tuesday, 3-4 July. Players can sign up for both days or any one of the two, and the entry fee per tournament is €145. For those competing in both events, the better score will count for the final classification.

In addition to playing at one of Spain’s finest courses, in impeccable condition after its refurbishment, participants will have the opportunity of competing for some magnificent prizes and enjoying a cocktail reception in conjunction with the prize presentation.

Royal Sotogrande’s origins date to the early 1960s, when Sotogrande founder Joseph McMicking told renowned designer Robert Trent Jones that he could personally choose the land to build a prime 18-hole course – with no restrictions or restraints.

It was Jones’ first project in Europe, and it marked a milestone in golf course construction on this side of the Atlantic, not only for his superb design but also for the innovations surrounding the project. It was the first course in Europe to be seeded with Bermuda 419 grass and the first to install a fully automated irrigation system.

Half a century later (the course was inaugurated in 1964), Royal Sotogrande required an upgrade, and in 2015 renovation work began on two phases that were eventually completed in July 2016.

The seventh annual Andalucía Golf Challenge this year coincides with Andalucía Golf/España Golf’s 30th anniversary as Spain’s longest-running bilingual golf magazine.
