The only new addition to the Costa del Sol’s golf course amenities in the last 10 years, Azata Golf (inaugurated last summer) will host the opening tournament of the 11th Andalucía Golf Challenge Circuit-Destination PGA Riviera Maya Bahía Príncipe on Saturday 6 March.

This is the first of 25 tournaments scheduled to make up the 11th edition of this popular open amateur circuit organised by Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine. The grand finale of the circuit, which will decide the five winners of trips to the Mexican Caribbean, will be held at Marbella Club Golf Resort on 2 October and will be followed by a gala dinner at El Gamonal Restaurant in Marbella.

Access to the grand final will be by direct qualification for the scratch winner of each tournament, while the rest of the places will be awarded based on players’ ranking from points obtained in each event.

The Azata Golf tournament will offer major prizes for the scratch winner and top three players in each category, as well as for the longest drive (male and female) and closest to the pin. The format is a shotgun start at 9.30am. Registration for the tournament is €53, which includes a buggy, post-round paella and gifts raffle.

The circuit’s sponsors are Sanitas, Bahía Príncipe Golf, Bahía Príncipe Hotels & Resorts and Bahía Príncipe Residences; and the main collaborators, Holiday Golf, Fairway+blue and D.O. Somontano. Cadena SER radio, AS daily newspaper and Andalucía Golf/España Golf magazine are the official media.

Course Description. Designed by Sterling and Martin Golf Course Architects, the course is a par-71 with a slightly longer front nine and wider fairways than the back nine, albeit not without its challenges. It is a comfortable layout that can be played perfectly on foot, without the need for a buggy. The outstandingly presented Azata Golf greens are wide and characterised by quite a few breaks. Water is present on many holes. The first part of the course is almost entirely highlighted by mountain views, while the second nine offers spectacular sea views. The 15th, a par-three with an island-style green, is one of Azata Golf’s emblematic holes.
